Trips on Request

In Brief: Find out how we can make it easy for you to take friends, family, students, staff, and co-workers for a day out at the Great Wall and other scenic areas in Beijing.

If the timing of our regularly scheduled hikes doesn't suit, or if you've got something special planned for a small or large group, we'd love to help you organise a special trip.

We've got tons of experience in hiking around Beijing, and we know all the good spots to visit. We also know how to organise trips that are hassle-free – more time for fun, less time spent negotiating the tricks and traps of travel in China's rural areas.

Several of our trails are very popular with private groups, and we've had very good feedback from our hikers about them. You'll find more information about those below. Would you like to try something else? We'd be very happy to talk about it.

We do need a bit of advance notice to be able to put together a private trip for you. If you're looking to do something tomorrow or the day after, it might be too late. Contact us anyway – we'll see what we can do!

For your school and students

Use our expertise and make it easier to arrange a suitably adventurous outing for students of any age. Camping, community service, or something more cultural? We'd love to hear from you. We'll talk with you to clarify what's required, and put together a plan for you.

For your office group

Reward the team and show them a good – and healthy! – time out in the countryside. We'll help you choose a hike that suits the fitness level and interest of participants, and we can arrange a giant meal of country-style cooking at one of the many countryside restaurants that we know and love. An excellent way to refresh those who have spent too much time at a desk. Next steps: contact us for ideas and a quote, and get it all moving quickly by letting us know when you'd like to do it and roughly how many people to expect.

For your family or a group of friends

Would you like to take family and friends on an outing that will go a little bit beyond the regular fun Beijing activities? Or is your time in Beijing short and our regular hikes not timed to fit your schedule? We can show you places that are a bit harder to reach by yourself, and we make it a smooth experience for you, no time-wasting or sneaky shopping detours.

Recommended Great Wall hikes

Book your trip

Gubeikou Great Wall

The Gubeikou Great Wall is one of the most accessible stretches of ‘wild’ wall in Beijing. Even if there was a cable car – there’s not – you wouldn’t need it.

The hike is picturesque, offering views without too much hard work. You’ll have long views of ‘wild’ Great Wall running along ridgelines, and as you crest high points the wall unfolds in front of you – perfect for your photos.

Surprisingly, Gubeikou is seldom-visited. There’s a great chance it’s going to be just you and your guide, with the wall all to yourself.

Choose this hike if you want to see classic Great Wall on a more relaxed outing, without worrying about tricky trails and extended uphill climbing.

Huanghuacheng Great Wall

The Great Wall at Huanghuacheng is the closest line of non-touristy Great Wall to Beijing city – just 1.5 hours’ drive on a good day.

The hike combines ‘wild’ Great Wall and a repaired section in a compact package. It’s easily doable in a day. You’ll see steep and weathered remains of Ming Dynasty wall, and a repaired section where you can see the wall as it may have looked like when first built.

These kind of sights are usually only available on longer, tougher Great Wall walks.

Note: the hike is a reasonably short 6km, but all the steep climbs up and down will make it feel a lot longer.

Key information

3–4 hours walking over 5–8km.

Included: English-speaking hiking guide, bottled water, snacks, lunch and drinks, hiking sticks, tickets, transportation in private vehicle.

Jiankou to Mutianyu Great Wall

On this hike you’ll visit the rugged Jiankou Great Wall and hike over to the restored Mutianyu Great Wall–a great way to get a look at ‘wild’ Great Wall as well as a renovated section that looks much like it would have back in the Ming Dynasty.

After a fairly tough climb up to Jiankou’s Zhenbei Tower, you’ll follow rough and unrepaired Great Wall for 2km before crossing over to Mutianyu for an 3km walk on the restored section. You’ll be on the wall for about 5km out of a total of 9km for the whole hike

Key information

4–5 hours of hiking over 9km.

Included: English-speaking hiking guide, bottled water, snacks, lunch and drinks, hiking sticks, tickets, transportation in private vehicle.
