The Beijing Hikers Club
Beijing Hikers was formed in August 2001 by Gary and Huilin Pinnegar. Huilin was born in China but has travelled extensively throughout the world, and Gary is from Britain. They have lived in Beijing since 1990, and would frequently go out to enjoy the truly spectacular scenery within only a short drive of downtown Beijing. They began going out hiking regularly with friends, and found many people were interested in getting out to the mountains near Beijing but did not know where to go. From their long experience hiking and from talking to the people living in the mountain areas, they were able to find interesting trails that are either little known or unknown to both the foreign and Chinese community.
In 2003, Huilin and Gary moved to Australia - since then Huilin’s sister Huijie has been organising the hikes.
Beijing Hikers practices eco-friendly tourism, using the "take only photographs, leave only footprints" approach to hiking, and employing local guides to assist us, aiming to have a positive effect in the areas that we hike in.
We are proudly independent, and don’t accept commissions, tips, or any other sort of kickbacks. When hiking with us there is no need to worry that you’ll be taken on a detour to shop for jade ornaments; if there’s a restaurant meal involved in any of the hikes, it’s because we know the food there is good, not because we’re getting a cut of the profits from the owners.
