This hike is a variation on the famous Gubeikou to Jinshanling hike, which turns to the hemp village instead back Great Wall to Jinshanling after getting out of the spider valley. This hike started at a village that dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD). This village is completely surrounded by a thick protective wall and is full of courtyard houses in various states of repair. Hiking photos - Great Wall Spur, 2011/08/07
This popular hike is part of our Seasons Series; we’ve done it in the spring and summer, and will repeat it in the autumn and winter. The Great Wall Spur is named for a section that branches off and ends at a cliff face. One story goes that it was built by mistake! After a challenging climb up a hill slope, we hiked along the Great Wall as it followed the top of a ridgeline, through several towers, before finishing at one of our favorite local restaurants.

During winter, the park officials at Heilongtan commission artists from the far north of China to help them create ice sculptures for their winter festival. The White River hike is excellent in both the summer and winter because of how the water changes. On this hike we crossed back and forth across the frozen river, admiring both the icefalls in the cliffs above us as well as the beautiful icicles in the holes underfoot. As we walked on the river’s ice, we noted the interesting changes in how it formed.

Hiking photos - Huanghuacheng Great Wall, 2010/12/01
On a misty Wednesday at the beginning of December, we walked a stretch of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall. We started near the Huanghuacheng Reservoir, and walked up and over the hill, heading for the Walled Village. The temperatures were low enough for the mist to turn into frost in some places, and we got some good photos - click through to see our photos.

This backpacking trip along the Great Wall took us into Hebei Province, where we followed the Wall between Big Camp Plate Village and Chenjiapu Village. Hiking photos - Zhenbiancheng and Big Plate Great Wall Challenge, 2010/5/15
Of the 18.5 kilometers we hiked, it seemed like we might have been walking on flat ground for just 1km in total. Despite a thick haze as we left the urban area of Beijing, we had breathtaking views of Hebei and the western border of Yanqing County as we tramped for seven and a half hours on the Zhenbiancheng section of the Great Wall. Trail Maintenance Day
When we scouted the trail for the Zhenbiancheng Great Wall Challenge, we noticed that sections of the route leading up to the Great Wall were very bushy.
