Hiking photos - Badgers’ Pass and Lotus Pond Overnight, 2010/7/31
On this two-day trip we hiked along trails and Great Wall in Huairou District, north of Beijing city.
On the first day, we walked the bushy Badgers' Pass trail, following an old path between villages. It took a lot longer than expected, as the trail was quite overgrown - most people drive between the two villages these days, and the trail is falling out of use. On the way, we saw a lot of flowers and mushrooms, an abandoned settlement, and some big pig traps.
After arriving at the village, we checked into the rooms at our guesthouse, had a nice big dinner, and enjoyed the views from the rooftop at the guesthouse.
The hike on the second day was along a stretch of Great Wall, and the weather was perfect. We were walking on the wall near Mutianyu, and got good views of restored and unrestored Great Wall without seeing a lot of other people. After we finished walking, we got a big lunch at a trout farm and headed back to Beijing.
A view of the hills above the village where we began the Badgers' Pass hike.
Huijie spotted this unusually coloured spider snaring a fly.
We cleared a space for lunch midway along the bushy trail.
Towards the end of the hike on the first day we passed these yellow flowers.
We had dinner in the courtyard of our countryside guest house.
The skies cleared in the evening, and the sun set behind an old pine tree in the village.
Sunset in the village.
On the second day we were up early for a Great Wall hike, heading for the Mutianyu area.
From the stretch of wall we walked, we had a good view of the restored Mutianyu section of Great Wall.
We picked a path through the grass and weeds growing on this part of the wall.
A restored tower, part of the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall.
The hiking group, just about to reach the restaurant!
