Hiking photos - Silver Pagodas hike, 2011/02/13
This hike is a popular one; the panoramic view from the hike’s highest point on top of a mountain gives a great impression of the area south of Huanghuacheng. Doing this hike the day after a snowfall made it even more beautiful, as it was our first chance this year to admire a landscape fully enveloped by winter.
Our walk began with a walk though Haizi Village, where we stopped to admire an opera theater by the village square and the Daoist temple across from it. From there, we walked up to the head of the village and through a quarry. The quarry abuts an eastward-facing valley that we followed up to its top. A shrine to Zhongkui, one of China’s folk pantheon, looks out over the valley and is believed to protect the village.
Leaving the shrine, we headed down another valley towards Wangbaochuan, another hamlet on the backside of the mountain we were skirting around. From there, we started up the mountain along a snow-covered trail. The climb was a little trickier than usual because of the conditions, but the snow made the views from the top all the more worthwhile!
This was our first hike after a big snow this winter.
The snow made the hike up this valley a little more challenging, but the snow-covered landscape made the view even more beautiful
