It’s a New Website!
Here’s your guide to the use of our website.
The main navigation goes along the top of the page, and features drop-down links to make it easier to find information quickly. On the old site it went down the right-hand side of the page. The layout now has three columns - the left-most column contains the main content for each page; the middle column usually contains extra information and links to things in the same site section, and the column on the far right will contain any other information that we think might be helpful.
The website now has seven main sections:
1. Home page
On the home page you can find the list of the hikes that we have arranged for the next week or so. The list is right there on the left-hand side of the page. In the list you can read a summary description of the hike, the basic hike information, and some links to more hike-related stuff. We’ve added a district map so you can get an idea of where in Beijing we’ll be heading for the hike. Included in the summary information are links to view photos from the hike and read the full description of the hike. We’ve got some nice and interesting stories about our hikes but they usually take up quite a bit of space, so we’ll put the stories on a separate page to the list.
Also on the home page is a form where you can enter your email address to join our mailing list. People on the mailing list get monthly updates of our hiking schedule and any other important news.
2. Upcoming hikes page
You can get to this page by clicking the ‘Upcoming hikes’ link in the main navigation across the top. A lot of the pages also have a link to the full list of upcoming hikes at the top, towards the center. The Upcoming hikes page lists our full schedule of hikes, normally covering the next month or so. If you like to plan ahead, go on and have a look.
The main list works the same as the list on the home page, only it’s much longer! In the middle column of the upcoming hikes page is an index of our hiking schedule. It lists the name of each hike, the date, and provides some links to help you get to information more quickly. You can click the link titled ‘Brief description’ to jump to the summary information for the hike; click the link titled ‘Full info’ to get to the full description for that hike; and you can get to the photo gallery for the hike by clicking the ‘Photos’ link.
Each hike now has it’s own special page, containing the full description of the hike, information about the next scheduled trip, and a larger picture and location map. You can get to this page by clicking through from any of the lists on the website - click the hike title, or any of the ‘Read more’ or ‘Full description’ type links. To get back to the list of upcoming hikes from these pages, click the ‘View all upcoming hikes’ link at the center/top of the page, or look for the list of upcoming hikes in the middle column of the page, under the map.
3. Private tour information
We organise private tours for small and large groups - if you’re interested, please read the information on that page, and get in touch with us.
4. Contact information
This section of the site has been expanded - we’ve now got a nice new map of where we meet before each hike; postal address and office phone and fax numbers, and some new form pages.
Of particular interest is our online reservation form. This form collects all the information we need to make a booking for you, and should make the whole process quicker. We’re not taking payments online yet though! You can get to the reservation form from the drop down navigation for the Contact section, or click the ‘Make a reservation’ or ‘Reservation information’ links in the hike summary lists or hike description pages.
5. About us page
In this section we’ve got information about the Beijing Hikers club, and the people involved in organising the hikes.
6. Resources section
In this section we’ve got some important and helpful information about hiking with us - the Hiking Safely page, a description of the different levels of difficulty of our hikes, and a list of places that you can buy hiking equipment. We aim to expand this section in the future.
7. Photos
This page lists our collections of photos taken on the hikes - we’ll keep adding more in here.
Here’s a list of the new location of pages that were most popular on our old website:
