Beijing Hikers - Hiking in the hills around Beijing since 2001

Auspicious Village and Huanghuacheng

Next scheduled trip
Sunday May 27th, 2012

300 RMB per person; Bus leaves from Lido Starbucks at 8:30am; return approx. 5:00pm     (Reservation information)

On this hike we will pass by three different villages - a good opportunity to compare the big-city lifestyle in Beijing to that of the inhabitants of small villages that are practically hidden from the outside world. We’ll get a late lunch at a local restaurant after the hike – the cost of the food and drinks is included in the price of the hike.

We’ll start from the small marketplace of a valley village, and follow a countryside trail over farmland and past an orchard, heading for a tall tree that serves as a landmark for the pass that crosses the mountain. On a clear day we will have views of the Great Wall as we walk. Coming down from the pass we’ll walk through a tiny village at the foot of a steep stretch of Great Wall. The village is situated at the head of a valley road, and there’s not much in the area to draw casual visitors, practically guaranteeing a peaceful walk along our trail.

After the the hike we’ll get snacks and drinks at a restaurant nearby the Huanghuacheng Great Wall. If you’ve still got energy after that, you can climb up there and have a look at the views of the reservoir from on top of the wall.

Level of difficulty for this hike

Level 3

Level 3 hikes are the type we do most often. Level 3 hikes will take approximately 2-3 hours, and can be either reasonably easy, or challenging, depending on an individual’s experience and level of fitness. They tend to be about 6 to 10 kilometers in length and involve one or two rigorous climbs. Most people will be able to complete a level 3 hike without much trouble, although they may be difficult for people who are not used to hiking or are severely out of shape. If you are an inexperienced hiker, please consider the following questions before registering for a level 3 hike: can you climb up three flights of stairs without getting winded? Can you walk for one hour without taking more than one five-minute break? Do you have comfortable shoes with good grip and support?
