Round Tower Great Wall

Next scheduled trip
Saturday September 11th, 2010

320RMB (200RMB for kids under 12); Bus leaves from Lido Starbucks at 8:30am; return approx. 5pm     (Reservation information)

The Round Tower sits on top of the mountain at the end of this stretch of the Great Wall, overlooking a deep valley. Round towers were usually constructed at the end of a stretch of Great Wall and used as a lookout and beacon. The drop down to the valley from the tower is not just vertical, but actually hangs over the canyon-like valley. The tower is situated in a perfect place for a lookout, with amazing views in almost every direction - the deep valley on one side, mountains on another, and a broad view of the Beijing plain and our path up and down the mountain.

There are two main trails up and back down the mountain, all in good condition and paved in many places. Because the path to the top and back is so clear we can make this a flexible hike. There are three other towers on the way up to the Round Tower - if you don’t want to climb all the way to the top you can take your time and visit as many of the other towers as you like. This means the hike is suitable for children in the low teens, but it would still be a bit difficult for them.

To end the hike we will follow one of the forks in the trail down to a small village at the foot of the mountain, and then head to a nearby restaurant for a good lunch of Chinese food and views of the Miyun Reservoir.

Level of difficulty for this hike

Level 2

Level 2 hikes are relaxing, and maybe a bit hilly, but do not involve very long climbs. They are usually less than 6 kilometers in length. This type of hike would take around two hours to finish, and will usually be suitable for children. It’s always best to check first about the child-friendliness of a hike.

Level 3+

Level 3+ hikes are a bit more difficult than a level 3, but easier than a level 4. Level 3 hikes will take approximately 2-3 hours, and can be either reasonably easy, or challenging, depending on an individual’s experience and level of fitness. They tend to be about 8 to 12 kilometers in length and involve one or two rigorous climbs. Most people will be able to complete a level 3+ hike without much trouble, although they may be difficult for people who are not used to hiking or are severely out of shape. If you are an inexperienced hiker, please consider the following questions before registering for a level 3 hike: can you climb up five flights of stairs without getting winded? Can you walk for two hours without taking more than one five-minute break? Do you have comfortable shoes with good grip and support?
