We headed out to the Jinshanling Great Wall on a cool and clear day, and had the place all to ourselves. Nice! The Jinshanling Great Wall is a repaired section that dates back to the Ming Dynasty, and offers some of the best views of the wall in Beijing. Click through to see photos.

The Rolling Hills hike is a good one for winter - nice and long, and with just enough hill climbing to keep you warm in cold weather.

The trail took us through villages and farmland, with some nice detours up on to ridgeline trails for views of the snow-covered countryside.

Along the Silk Road from Korla to Kashgar, 2015/09

During the October Golden Week holiday we made a seven-day expedition along the Silk Road, with stops in Korla, Kuqa, Aksu, and Kashgar.

As well as checking out the sights in the old oasis towns that were key stops on the journey to the west we camped a night in Baicheng, where we hiked in some stunning scenery that’s well off of the tourist track.

On this two-day trip we hiked the Great Wall at Gubeikou and camped overnight in one of the big towers. On the second day we hiked on to the Jinshanling Great Wall.

The second day was quite a contrast to the first, after fog and mist rolled in.
