Yajishan Temple Fair, 2015/05/20

Yajishan Temple Fair, 2015/05/20

Every year there’s a weeklong temple fair at the village below Yaji Mountain—a little like the temple fairs during Spring Festival in Beijing city, but with a much more rural flavour. We went out for a look at the festivities, and also did the loop hike up to the temples and down around the back of the mountain. Click through for a look at photos from the hike and the fair!

Hike and teambuilding for ThyssenKrupp, 2015/05

The ThyssenKrupp company contacted us to organise a hike and teambuilding activity for one of their office teams – a great idea to get colleagues interacting in a different environment than the office, and a great chance to build stronger relationships within the team.

Click through to see photos and to find out more about the teambuilding activity we organised for the group.

Dahaituo Mountain hike, 2015/04/25

Dahaituo Mountain sits right on the border of Beijing’s Yanqing County and neighbouring Hebei Province, and the climb up to the 2,198.388m peak is one of our favourites.

On this visit, we somehow had the whole mountain to ourselves on a perfect blue sky day. Click through to see the photos!

Earth Day Clean Up Hike at Jiankou, 2015/4/25

Earth Day Clean Up Hike at the Jiankou Great Wall, 2015/4/25

We’ve done a clean up hike for Earth Day every year since 2009, heading out to hiking trails that have been somewhat spoiled by a buildup of trash and packing it out for disposal in a more appropriate location.

This year we headed out to the Jiankou Great Wall, a well-known stretch of ‘wild’ Great Wall that has become increasing popular amongst casual hikers in recent years.

Big thanks to everyone who joined in, and special thanks to Anita F. and to Gung Ho! Pizza for the support.

Miao and Dong culture in Guizhou, 2015/04

Miao and Dong culture in Guizhou Province, 2015/04

Early spring is the best time to visit Guizhou, a mountainous province in central south China. There are all together 18 ethnic groups living in Guizhou, with many based in the south-eastern part of the province. We headed down in April to take a look. You can take a look, too – click through to see Jun’s photos!

Private hike for Beanstalk International Bilingual School, 2015/04/15

As well as the join-in hikes and trips you see on the website, we do a lot of trips on request for schools and office groups.

For this trip for the students at Beijing’s Beanstalk International Bilingual School we took care of the hiking and safety side of things, with the school providing the buses.

Click through to see some photos from the hike along the Gubeikou Great Wall.

Longquanyu Great Wall and the Little West Lake, 2015/04

Longquanyu Great Wall and the Little West Lake, 2015/03/05

The Longquanyu Great Wall is found in the hills north of the Ming Tombs, and it’s a short section with some very steep climbs. The weather for the hike was nice and warm – as though spring had arrived early! The scenery in the hills hadn’t caught up, though: all brown and bare, and the Little West Lake was still fully frozen. A fun hike, anyway! Click through to see 24 photos from the walk on the wall.

Middle Route of Switchback Great Wall, 2015/02/21

Middle Route of Switchback Great Wall, 2015/02/21

The Switchback Great Wall is one of our favourite places for escaping the crowds and tackling some challenging climbs. Because we travel out past the very popular tourist sections near Badaling, we are left with an unrestored stretch of the Great Wall all to ourselves. Click through to see all the photos!

Nine-Eyes Tower snow hike, 2015/02/20

Nine-Eyes Tower snow hike, 2015/02/20

The Nine-Eyes Tower hike is fairly tricky on a good day - steep and rocky, with some very slippery bits.

On this visit we had to change the plan a little: the snow made certain sections of the trail unwalkable, and we shortened the hike to be sure we’d be on the way back before the roads started icing over.

We didn’t see quite as much of the Great Wall as we’d wanted to, but the beautiful snowy scenery certainly made up for that – click through to see the photos!

Jiankou Big West Great Wall, 2015/02/11

Jiankou ‘Big West’ Great Wall, 2015/02/11

The Great Wall on the west side of Jiankou is quite a mixture—some of it totally collapsed and rough, and some of it in excellent condition despite going more than four hundred years without any repairs.

Click through to see 30+ photos from a cold day out on the Great Wall.

Gubeikou Great Wall hike, 2015/02/08

The Gubeikou Great Wall is one of our favourite spots for a relaxed walk along the Great Wall, because of the long views of the old wall running through the hills. Perfect on a blue sky day! Click through to see fifteen photos from our hike back in February.

White River ice hike, 2015/01/27

White River ice hike, 2015/01/27

The White River hike is one of our most popular hikes, but we can only do it at certain times in the year. In summer, heavy rain often means the river runs too high to ford. In early spring and late autumn, the water is too cold! But in the middle of winter, the river freezes over and we can walk down the ice. Click through to see photos from the hike!

Gubeikou Great Wall to Jinshanling Great Wall

Great Wall Christmas 2014 - Gubeikou Great Wall to Jinshanling Great Wall

Click through to see photos from the hike and the dumpling-making competition!
