Nine Eyes Tower Great Wall, 2016/12/18

It was all blue sky in the mountains on this hike – a lovely change from the smog in the city.

We hiked up to Nine-Eyes Tower, one of the largest towers in the area and also one of the tallest – almost 1,200m above sea level.

Longquanyu Loop and Great Wall, 2016/12/17

We went out to Longquanyu on a smoggy city day and were pleased to find much clearer air in the mountains by the Great Wall.

Because of recent sunny weather the wall was free of ice, but the last part of the walk took us along a narrow stream which was already mostly frozen over.

Over the Hills to Yaji Mountain, 2016/12/10

Like the name of the hike says, on this trail we walk over the hills to reach Yaji Mountain. There are temples atop Yaji Mountain, and we climbed the steep stairs all the way to the top.

Silver Pagoda Loop hike, 2016/12/04

The Silver Pagoda Loop hike is a countryside walk that is reasonably easy, except for the big climb up to the peak of Silver Mountain.

As well as getting a look at the pagodas, we had a glimpse of the lifestyle of Beijing’s rural residents as we walked through small villages.

We hiked the Great Wall from Jinshanling to Gubeikou on one of the few days during the Golden Week holiday where the weather was acting nice – no smog, no rain, all clear and sunny.

Yanqing Great Wall and High Tower Challenge, 2016/09/24

The Yanqing Great Wall and High Tower trail is one of our favourite long walks in Beijing—about 17km long, with a lot of climbing up and down, and great views the whole way.

We lucked out with the weather on this visit as well, coming through a big fog on the drive there and then out into clear skies just in time to start the hike.

Xiahe, Labrang Monastery, and the Zhagana area in southern Gansu, September 2016

We made a 5-day trip to check out monasteries, temples, and small villages in the Tibetan area of Gannan, driving more than 900km through the mountains and getting a great look at local Tibetan and Muslim culture.
