Big Black Mountain to Moss Mountain, 2015/04/30

This hike is a combination of two of our Level 3+ hikes: the Big Black Mountain to the Walled Village hike, and then the Moss Mountain walk.

It’s a long hike, but there isn’t a whole lot of climbing. That makes it a good choice if you’re interested in a long ramble in the hills of Huairou. Click through to see 23 photos of farmland and orchards, hills and mountains, and plenty of greenery.

Great Wall clean up hike for Earth Day, 2016/4/23

Great Wall clean up hike for Earth Day, 2016/4/23

We’ve done a clean up hike for Earth Day every year since 2009, heading out to hiking trails that have been somewhat spoiled by a buildup of trash and packing out loads of litter for disposal in a more appropriate location.

This year we teamed up with Gung Ho! Pizza to make our eighth annual Earth Day clean up hike part of the 1st Beijing Earth Day Festival, and we had a great turn out for the hike, with 26 people showing up to help out with the clean up.

We took on the challenge of cleaning up Nine-Eyes Tower, a tower on the Great Wall at Jiankou that’s 1,190m above sea level.

Hillwalking challenge 2016/04/16

Flower Wood to the Ming Tombs hillwalking challenge, 2016/04/16

The Flower Wood to the Ming Tombs hillwalking challenge was a 26km hike through the hills of Huairou and Changping, starting in the north of Beijing and finishing back on the city side of the mountains.

We know a lot of trails in this area of Beijing, and there are options for hikes of 10km, 15km, and 20km. This time we decided to join the whole lot up for a good long 26km walk. Maybe next time we’ll add the last section and make it 30km!

Stone Valley Great Wall Loop, 2016/4/16

The Stone Valley Loop follows the same section of wall as our Middle Switchback hike, but we start and finish on the other side of the hill – it’s a longer walk and more scenic, as the trail takes us through forest and further into the hills.

A Long Way to Catch the Train, 2016/4/10

A Long Way to Catch the Train, 2016/4/10

The Long Way to Catch the Train hike is one of our older trails, and the area has seen a lot of change over the years—not least being that there are now easier ways to get to the train station than walking over a big hill!

On this visit the flowers were out, and we had a lovely clear day. Click through to see photos.

Switchback Great Wall Camping, 2016/03/26

With the temperatures warming up a little earlier this year we thought it was time to start our camping trips again.

The temperatures dipped in the week before the trip, and we were a little concerned it was going to be freezing up on the wall.

Big Black Mountain to the Walled Village, 2016/3/13

Big Black Mountain to the Walled Village, 2016/3/13

This hike was one of our old favourites, but we stopped doing it because the starting point got all concreted over.

We went out to do some scouting for a new starting point, and found a good trail that avoided most of the concrete – good enough for us to start doing this hike again.

How was it? Click through to see all the photos!

Walk Down the Pilgrim’s Trail, 2016/3/06

This was a hike of two halves: the first half cold and chilly, and all uphill to get over to the Beijing side of the mountains; the second half with the sun out as we walked all the way down to the end.
