UPDATE 2017/7/19: We’ve changed this hike to the Yunmengxia Swim or Explore trip, because the White River is not currently safe for hiking.
This hike begins near where we finish our regular version of our White River hike, and finishes further downstream.
On this route, we cross the river 7-8 times, passing the outskirts of small villages in an area that’s a bit quieter than our regular White River – fewer cars, more goats.
As we hike down, we’ll see cliffs and mountains, plus old fields and farmland. On our scouting trip we saw a lot of birdlife – fingers crossed for more of that on this visit.
We’ll pass under a big new bridge after walking past the sketchy remains of the old swingbridge, and as we get closer to the end of the hike we might also see a few rock climbers high up on the cliffs.
Further down, we follow a trail beside the river that skirts cornfields and we’ll see the remains of the old ropes and bridges that were previously used to cross over to the fields on the other side of the river.
The hike finishes on a narrow goat track that is sandwiched between the river and the base of a cliff. This is another spot that wouldn’t be good if the river levels were too high, but there’s another way around this bend of the river.
Our bus will be waiting for us in the carpark of a little village by the river.
Note: If the river level is raised because of rain we might not be able to hike. We’ll know for sure in the week before the hike.
What to bring on this hike
- Lunch and snacks to eat
- Sun protection: long-sleeved shirt, hat
- Waterproof jacket
- A bottle of sports drink with salt content (Gatorade, Pocari Sweat)
- Good hiking boots
- Sandals to use for crossing the river
- A change of clothes to leave on the bus
