Special trip photos – Lijiang and Shangri-La, 2011/11

Our last long distance trip for the year was to Yunnan Province, where we walked the cobbled lanes of the old towns of Lijiang and Shangri-La, did a little countryside hiking, and got a good local at the local ethnic culture. Huanghuacheng Great Wall

Hiking photos - Walled Village to Huanghuacheng Great Wall hike, 2011/11/16

This hike started at a village that dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD). This village is completely surrounded by a thick protective wall and is full of courtyard houses in various states of repair. From there, we walked up to a nearby stretch of Great Wall and followed it over to Huanghuacheng, taking photos along the way – click through to take a look!

Zhuangdaokou Great Wall

Hiking photos - Zhuangdaokou to the Walled Village, 2011/11/13

On this nice and easy hike we walked between two small countryside villages, stopping midway to explore a section of Great Wall. It was a very clear day, and we had excellent views while hiking, especially from high up on the wall. Click through to read a write up and see photos!

Scouting trip photos – Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, 2011/11

In November 2011 Huijie and Yanjing headed south to Sichuan for a scouting trip to the Jiuzhaigou National Park, and the surrounding area. Their tasks: figure out how to best organise a trip down there; try out the accommodation and restaurants; and take as many photos as possible! The Jinshanling section of the Great Wall is one of our favourites: it’s an impressive example of Ming Dynasty Great Wall, it has a mixture of restored and unrestored areas, and it’s far enough out of the city to not be totally crowded. Hiking photos - Great Wall Spur, 2011/08/07

This popular hike is part of our Seasons Series; we’ve done it in the spring and summer, and will repeat it in the autumn and winter. The Great Wall Spur is named for a section that branches off and ends at a cliff face. One story goes that it was built by mistake! After a challenging climb up a hill slope, we hiked along the Great Wall as it followed the top of a ridgeline, through several towers, before finishing at one of our favorite local restaurants.
