Along the Silk Road from Korla to Kashgar, 2014/06

For this seven-day adventure we followed a less well-known strand of the Silk Road, making our own ‘journey to the west’ as we passed by several oasis towns also visited by the monk Xuanzang on his journey to India in search of Buddhist scriptures to bring back home.

Along the way we saw all sorts of interesting sights: hills, mountains, and other curious landforms; old oasis towns and their inhabitants; remains of ancient cities, and more!

We picked a good day for this hike to Nine-Eyes Tower: incredibly clear skies, and weather that was not too hot. We capped off a great hike with a great meal—fresh pizza, served by our good friends from Gung Ho! Pizza. Click through for photos of hiking and the pizza feast!

Camping at the Gubeikou Great Wall, May 2014

The Gubeikou to Jinshanling Great Wall hike can be easily done in one day, but it’s also fun to take it more slowly. We took two days to do it, camping overnight at a nice spot right beside the Great Wall.
