Hiking photos – Switchback Great Wall, 2012/05/05
Our Switchback Great Wall hike follows an obscure stretch of unrestored Great Wall in Yanqing County. On this visit, we did the longer, tougher version, following the crumbling wall up and down steep ridges and passing the strange section that gives this hike its name.
Taking a photo before a steep climb.
The wall in this area is unrestored and surrounded by bush.
One of the rare flat sections on this otherwise steep, unrenovated part of the Great Wall.
The Great Wall mostly follows ridges but here skirts a rocky knoll to make a switchback shape.
One of the many tricky sections on this walk.
A rock covered with brightly covered lichen … and a curious caterpillar.
Another steep section.
This part of the wall remains in very good condition.
The group takes a well deserved rest break to savor the views and enjoy the scenery.
