The Perfect Loop hike in Pinggu District goes over some really gorgeous pastoral scenery. Enjoying a refreshing early spring day, we walked up a valley and over a ridge before beginning to wind our way down into a canyon on the other side.

Being east of where we normally hike, we had the opportunity to appreciate how the character of the landscape varies in Beijing. As we walked down the road winding along the mountain slope, we could look out over another broad valley and villages we’d pass through later in the hike.

The second half of the route brought us through a canyon with a frozen river at the bottom of it. Afterward, we started climbing again, eventually going over a ridge that returned us into the same valley as the beginning of the hike. We completed our loop, and then drove back towards Beijing, stopping along the way for a delicious meal.
