Occasionally we do trips with less of a focus on hiking. During October, Huilin, one of the founders of Beijing Hikers, was in town, and seeing as she is an artist and teacher at the University of Western Australia we decided to organise a trip to the countryside to learn about Chinese watercolour painting, and sketching technique.

As well as climbing up into the hills to do some sketching, participants climbed up on to the roof of a local guesthouse to try out some watercolour painting, and enjoyed a nice big meal of country-style Chinese cooking. It's quite common for younger students in Beijing art schools to do similar painting and sketching expeditions
