We’ve been doing clean up hikes since 2009 – sometimes at the Great Wall, sometimes at other places.
For this clean up, Gung Ho! Pizza asked us to get involved, as they’re planning a program of regular clean up hikes near their base at the Jiankou Great Wall.
So it was sort of like a test run for a program of more regular clean up hikes.
The test run went pretty good!
The team hauled down about 18 kilograms of trash, which was a great effort. 18 kilograms is less than we’ve collected on previous visits, which was also great.
And with Gung Ho! having a base near the Great Wall there, the clean up team was also treated to a post-hike feast of freshly-cooked pizza and salads, all washed down with beer and ice tea courtesy of sponsors Moa Beer. and Papps Tea (both available at Gung Ho! Pizza stores).
Big thanks to Patagonia for getting involved with the event and helping with promotion and some gifts for the clean up crew.

We talked a bit about the clean up hike and how we’d been able to get pretty much 100% of the trash off that one section of wall today.
