White River hike, 2016/6/11
Blue skies, great scenery, cool and clear water – the White River hike!

One of our favourite trails for summer is the White River hike, a 12km trail that follows the White River downstream.
We ford the river as we walk down the canyon – a great way to stay cool in hot weather.
As well as the water, there’s a lot to look at – the remains of film sets, the tall cliffs of the canyon, little fish in the water, and a family of herons that nest high in the cliffs near the end of the hike.

Starting out with a walk down to the river track.

Goose.

Flowers by the road.

More geese.

We hiked down into the canyon.

Big rock walls, with some rafts below for scale.

The wobbly suspension bridge. It’s getting wobblier every year!

A gravel road took us further down the canyon.

The first crossing.

We stopped here for a lunch break.

Another crossing.

Made it to the other side.

Hiking further down the canyon.

We hiked out along an old access road.

Coming close to the end of the hike.

Second-to-last crossing.

The very last crossing.

Looking back upstream.

We had a little picnic at the end before heading back.
