Flower Wood to the Ming Tombs hillwalking challenge, 2016/04/16
Photos from a 26km hike through the hills of Huairou and Changping.

The Flower Wood to the Ming Tombs hillwalking challenge was a 26km hike through the hills of Huairou and Changping, starting in the north of Beijing and finishing back on the city side of the mountains.
We know a lot of trails in this area of Beijing, and there are options for hikes of 10km, 15km, and 20km. This time we decided to join the whole lot up for a good long 26km walk. Maybe next time we’ll add the last section and make it 30km!
The day before the hike we had a big rainstorm come through Beijing, and there was the threat of more rain throughout the day. In the end we got a big wind instead, which resulted in clear skies and long views.

Starting off near Flower Wood village.

A quick rest before taking on the first hill.

At the top of the first hill, beside a shrine and an old pine tree.

Another clearer view of the shrine.

Trail markers on a turn down a valley.

Nice dirt trails to hike along.

We stopped for lunch in a hollow.

Nearby was a small reservoir.

We hiked on after lunch, following a trail around the back of the mountains in the background of the photo.

Crossing over another hill, passing another shrine and pine tree.

Down into a valley, passing pear trees in bloom.

The top of the third hill—one more to go after this!

Down into a wild valley.

At the top of the last hill, with great views of the Ming Tombs area.

The view from the top.

We finished with snacks and drinks.
