Beijing Hikers in TimeOut magazine’s ‘10 City Secrets’

TimeOut Beijing magazine was putting together an article about ‘offbeat, bizarre, or lesser-heard facts about the city’ and asked us if we had any interesting facts or stories.

They picked out two of our suggestions to include: a story of camel danger near Beijing, and a spot where you can see the city from up on the Great Wall.

Beijing Hikers goes way back

We were going through the archives the other month and found a bit of Beijing Hikers history—a BTV interview with founders Gary and Huilin about their early-90s 5,000 mile bike ride from Beijing to London.

It predates the hiking club by quite a few years, but you can see the adventurous spirit and environmentalist roots from which Beijing Hikers appeared, and you can also get an idea of what people were doing in Beijing around that time. If you’re an old school Beijinger you might recognise a few names!
