Gubeikou Great Wall West, 2013/05/12
Photos from our hike along the western side of the Gubeikou Great Wall.
We’ve started doing hikes on the west side of the Gubeikou Great Wall – a nice area with a line of Great Wall that runs through the hills.
We went out in May during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, getting out of the city and away from the crowded tourist areas.
The weather was excellent – clear and not too hot – and we had a great day out hiking on the wall.

We walked up a long valley to find the Great Wall.

The sun was behind this tall tower.

The base of the wall here is still solid, but the parapets and some of the sides have fallen away.

This is where we got up on to the wall. We headed in the opposite direction to the tall tower – too steep and tricky up that way.

Behind the tall tower, the wall continues.

We followed the wall further into the hills

Green hills and blue sky.

The wall here is broken down and trees have grown on top.

The wall keeps going up and over the ridge in front.

The wall made a sharp turn here.

This tower is still in decent shape after at least 400 years of weathering.

A big tower sits atop a bluff – this one would be hard to attack!
