We started this hike in a small settlement nicknamed 'Longevity Village'. It's said that the locals live long because of the fresh spring water in the area.

From the village we walked up a service road, passing chestnut orchards and cornfields on the way to a small shrine in the hills. Local people used to build shrines on a high hill above their village in the belief that it would protect the village. This shrine was renovated by a quarry company in an attempt to restore the feng shui that was damaged while digging away all the hills.

Next on the trail was Haizi Village, where we passed a 300-year-old opera stage and a temple called the ‘Nine Fairies’ temple, originally built during the Liao Dynasty (907–1125).

After we left Haizi Village, we followed a small trail over the hills to the Silver Pagodas. We took a look around – beautiful in the snow! – and then it was time to head home again.
