Rolling Hills and Empty Lanes, 2017/3/05
Twenty-two photos from a long but easy walk through the rolling hills by the Miyun Reservoir.

We’ve been doing this walk since the early days of Beijing Hikers, and we know the area pretty well. That’s lucky, because it seems like there’s a surprise waiting every visit – a new fence, a new road, a trail so overgrown you can’t see it any more ... all kinds of things that require a detour to get back on track.
On this visit we found one new fence blocking the usual path, and the beginnings of a new road cut through the middle of a section that is usually heavily overgrown. There was also a nice surprise – a new trail up to a high point with excellent views.

Hiking by cornfields, looking for a path over the hill.

Follow the ribbons and find the path.

Climbing up through an orchard.

Views of the Yunmeng Mountains.

On a dirt road, heading for the next village.

Now on to a concrete path through the fields.

Back on to a dirt trail.

Quick break in the sun.

A detour around a fence. Our regular trail is up in the trees on the left.

On a flat path by the fields.

We took a detour up to a high point, following a new path.

Views towards Miyun City and the mountains.

We’d be hiking through these hills later on.

More views of the rolling hills. The low hills in the middle distance are just south of the big Miyun Reservoir.

We followed new concrete roads, passing a tree nursery.

Heading into the hills again.

Turning off the concrete.

By the trees.

Further back on the trail we’d spotted (and smelled) signs of cattle. Here they are.

We took this shepherd’s trail around the hill instead of climbing up over it.

Finished the hike, time for snacks and drinks.
