Walled Village to Huanghuacheng Great Wall, 2016/01/13
See eighteen photos from our hike from the Walled Village up to the Huanghuacheng Great Wall.
With clear blue skies we had super views of a great variety of scenery on this trail: small country villages, farmland and fields and forests, and a lovely line of Ming Dynasty Great Wall.
We started off with a little look at what’s left of a Ming Dynasty barracks - thick walls and a big archway that surround a small group of courtyard houses.
From the old barracks we followed a trail through fields and forest up to the Great Wall, going through some snow in a shaded valley.
We followed the wall over to the Huanghuacheng Reservoir, passing along both wild and restored sections of the Great Wall.
With the cold, clear weather the views were excellent, as you’ll see in the photos below!

Approaching the big gate of the Ming Dynasty barracks.

Guide Simon is pointing out a few lookout towers on the ridge behind the barracks. The towers aren't joined to the main line of wall here, but are sited to allow a longer view up the valley behind the hill.

A courtyard house inside the barracks. Seems that after the soldiers moved out, farmers moved in.

We hit the trail towards the orchards and the climb up to the Great Wall.

There was still a bit of snow in the cool valley below the wall.

Back in the sunshine, and almost up on the Great Wall.

Finally on the wall, at a big tower on a high point.

Nice long views on a clear day.

Coming up to a tower.

A helping hand down one of the larger steps.

Down below we see the front of our little group.

Almost up to the last peak on the trail.

Our group pose for a photo showing their support for a young cancer victim.

The last high point for the day, a good spot for a group photo.

Also a good spot for some yoga?!

We continued down the wall to finish at the at the buildings down below.

Tasty food at the local restaurant.
