With clear blue skies we had super views of a great variety of scenery on this trail: small country villages, farmland and fields and forests, and a lovely line of Ming Dynasty Great Wall.
We started off with a little look at what’s left of a Ming Dynasty barracks - thick walls and a big archway that surround a small group of courtyard houses.
From the old barracks we followed a trail through fields and forest up to the Great Wall, going through some snow in a shaded valley.
We followed the wall over to the Huanghuacheng Reservoir, passing along both wild and restored sections of the Great Wall.
With the cold, clear weather the views were excellent, as you’ll see in the photos below!

Guide Simon is pointing out a few lookout towers on the ridge behind the barracks. The towers aren't joined to the main line of wall here, but are sited to allow a longer view up the valley behind the hill.

We hit the trail towards the orchards and the climb up to the Great Wall.
