Bashang Grasslands, August 2015

Bashang Grasslands, August 2015

The Bashang Grasslands are one of our favourite spots for a weekend escape during the summer, far enough north from Beijing that the temperatures are sometimes 10°C cooler.

We head out a few times a year, arriving late on a Friday night and doing two half-days of hiking and other activities in the area before coming back to Beijing.

Click through to see a set of photos from our August 2015 visit, with shots of hikers, horses, hills, and big blue skies.

Walled Village to the Little West Lake, 2015/08/08

Walled Village to the Little West Lake, 2015/08/08

The Huanghuacheng area has a pretty mixture of restored and unrestored Great Wall the, making it a good spot for a Great Wall hike. Add to that old barracks at the Walled Village, the chestnut orchards and fields, and the reservoir views, and there’s plenty to see while walking about.

Yunmeng Gorge hike and swim, 2015/07/12

Yunmeng Gorge hike and swim, 2015/07/12

We’d planned the Level 4 Great Flood hike for today, but with a forecast high of 37°C we decided we’d better change the plan!

The Great Flood hike finishes with a walk out Yunmeng Gorge, a scenic area with a river and good pools for swimming. Instead of doing the full hike, we drove straight to Yunmeng Gorge and hiked up to the swimming holes - a much cooler way to spend the day.

Our trip to the Bayinbuluke Grasslands is a big looping road-trip that starts and finishes in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Province. During the loop, we follow part of the Silk Road, cross the Tianshan Mountains at a high pass, camp and hike on the grasslands, and then visit forests and mountains on the way back to Urumqi.

Bashang Grasslands, Hebei Province, 2015/06

Far enough from Beijing to be worth the trip but still close enough to be a viable weekender, the Bashang Grasslands offer a taste of the Inner Mongolian plains without needing to go quite so far.

Middle Switchback Great Wall, 2015/06/07

Our Middle Switchback Great Wall hike follows a section of rough but pretty Great Wall in the hills west of Badaling. It’s quite a contrast to the touristed section of Great Wall at Badaling - here it’s all unrestored, and seldom-visited!

Click through to see photos of the Great Wall, plus blue skies and green, forested hills.

We provided all the tents, gear, and supplies; all set for a fun weekend on the wall.
