Gubeikou Great Wall Loop, 2015/09/19

We had beautiful blue skies and awesome views of the wall on this visit to Gubeikou. After hiking up from Gubeikou Village we walked up to 24-Eyes Tower, getting a great look at this part of the Great Wall.

Chinese Knot Great Wall, 2015/09/12

The ‘Chinese Knot’ (also known as the ‘Beijing Knot’) is a spot on the Jiankou Great Wall where three lines of Great Wall intersect. Nearby the Knot is the iconic ‘Pine Tree on the Wall’, featured in a whole lot of photo albums from the Jiankou Great Wall.

On this trail we hike over from the Beijing side, following part of our Great Wall Spur trail before making the steep climb up to the Chinese Knot.

Walled Village to Huanghuacheng Great Wall, 2015/09/10

Our Walled Village to the Huanghuacheng Great Wall hike is a Level 3 hike with some Level 4-type steep climbs - just about 6km in total, but with some steep sections of restored and wild wall to get up and down.

On this visit we enjoyed the clear and cool weather as well as the views of Great Wall, mountains, and the first sights of autumn colours in the foliage.

Hiking at night is something you don’t get to do every … day? We keep an eye on the moon phases, and always try get out for a night hike when the full moon falls on a Friday or Saturday. It’s a great feeling to walk by the light of the moon, and strolling around at night you get to see yet another side of Beijing’s countryside.

We scouted out a new trail that would take us through mountains and valleys to Shuitou Village, a remote farming area way out in Hebei Province.

For the walk we had beautiful blue skies and cool weather, and we hiked through a great mix of scenery.

Bashang Grasslands, August 2015

The Bashang Grasslands are one of our favourite spots for a weekend escape during the summer, far enough north from Beijing that the temperatures are sometimes 10°C cooler.

We head out a few times a year, arriving late on a Friday night and doing two half-days of hiking and other activities in the area before coming back to Beijing.

The Huanghuacheng area has a pretty mixture of restored and unrestored Great Wall the, making it a good spot for a Great Wall hike. Add to that old barracks at the Walled Village, the chestnut orchards and fields, and the reservoir views, and there’s plenty to see while walking about.

Yunmeng Gorge hike and swim, 2015/07/12

We’d planned the Level 4 Great Flood hike for today, but with a forecast high of 37°C we decided we’d better change the plan!

The Great Flood hike finishes with a walk out Yunmeng Gorge, a scenic area with a river and good pools for swimming. Instead of doing the full hike, we drove straight to Yunmeng Gorge and hiked up to the swimming holes - a much cooler way to spend the day.

Bayinbuluke Grasslands, Xinjiang, July 2015

Our trip to the Bayinbuluke Grasslands is a big looping road-trip that starts and finishes in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Province. During the loop, we follow part of the Silk Road, cross the Tianshan Mountains at a high pass, camp and hike on the grasslands, and then visit forests and mountains on the way back to Urumqi.
