This hike takes us up to a Great Wall Tower with spectacular, sweeping views of the Great Wall at Jiankou, the Chinese Knot, as well as the section we walk on the Great Wall Spur hike. The hike is a reasonably tough one but is well worth the effort. Click through for photos and more!

Hiking photos - Middle Route of the Switchback Great Wall, 2011/3/19

This hike follows a section of the Great Wall as it straddles the border in Yangqing county northwest of Beijing. After climbing up from a valley, we hiked along the Wall, finally reaching a fantastic lookout point on the General’s Tower. The views from there were great that day even in spite of the hazy skies. On this ridge and valley hike, we were accompanied by Betsy Taylor, a naturalist who explained some of the flora and fauna that we saw. This early spring hike had us walking along top of a ridge as well as through the bottom of a valley. We followed the Great Wall and enjoyed fantastic views of the mountains north of Beijing before we started following a semi-frozen river up the valley. On this ridge and valley hike, we were accompanied by Mr. Mao, a local resident who acted as our guide, and Betsy Taylor, a naturalist who explained some of the flora and fauna that we saw. We had crystal clear skies and cool temperatures for our hike from the Auspicious village to Huanghuacheng. As we made our approach into the mountains, we had good views of the surrounding hills and cliffs, and as well as a high section of Great Wall and distant peaks after pausing for lunch. Gubeikou Great Wall tower, Beijing Hikers Gubeikou hike

Hiking photos - Gubeikou Loop Hike, 2011/03/05

This hike is a variation on the famous Gubeikou to Jinshanling hike, but which loops around to end at the starting place. It’s on an unrestored section of Great Wall and as such, tends to get less traffic than recently renovated sections of the Wall. Click through for photos.

We headed out into Pinggu District on a pleasant day to do a hike we hadn’t yet done in 2011. The hike took us up a pretty valley and down a road that wound its way along the mountainside.
