This hike is an easy, relaxing stroll from the village of Zhuangdaokou to the Walled Village, a small settlement that once was home to the Ming Dynasty soldiers who were in charge of the upkeep and guarding of the section of Great Wall in that area. Hiking photos - Ingot Village and Tanzhe Temple, 2011/06/11

This hike is an easy, relaxing stroll around a small village called Yangpoyuan, near west Beijing’s Tanzhesi Temple. After exploring the courtyards and lanes of this empty village, we visited Tanzhe Temple, where we took a look around and burned some incense. Hiking photos - Mr. Mao’s Chestnut Orchard, 2011/06/05

On this ridge and valley hike, we were accompanied by Mr. Mao, a local resident who acted as our guide. This route included a flat section across cultivated land, some short steep ascents up a rocky ridge to get good views of the nearby peaks and Great Wall towers, and a gentle stroll along the bottom of a river valley, followed by a large lunch! Hiking photos - The Quarrymen’s Trail to the Ming Tombs, 2011/06/04

This hike involves a route that, for most of its length, is different from the normal trails that we take to the Ming Tombs. It winds gently through forests, valleys, and hills before joining the last part of our usual route for the descent to the tombs. Click through for photos and more!
