1. Changes to the cost of hiking
We're sorry to say that, because of rising costs, we have had to raise the price of many of our hikes. We take pride in offering a high level of service and a safe hiking experience, and, in order to maintain our high standards, the cost of hikes that pass through parks and/or are a long way out of the city will increase. Please click through for a more detailed explanation. (Along with some good news as well.)

    Silver Pagoda Loop

For this hike we will follow a seldom-used trail to get to the Silver Pagodas, a set of five impressive 300 year-old pagodas still standing on the site of an old temple. On the way to the pagoda site we will take a long walk through the countryside, passing a village, quarries, and a local shrine, before a steep climb to the 730m peak of Holly Mountain. From the top we can look down on the pagodas and large swathes of the surrounding countryside, and as we follow the path down we will pass large bells, “North Beijing’s Number One Waterfall,” and plenty of other interesting local landmarks. After the hike we’ll get a late lunch at a local restaurant - the cost of the food and drinks is included in the price of the hike.

Silver Pagoda Loop - Basic hike information
Cost: 320RMB per person; Bus leaves from Lido Starbucks at 8:30am; 1.5 hours travel each way; 3 hours of hiking; return approx. 5:30pm.

    Gubeikou to Jinshanling

For this challenging hike we’ll travel up to the far north-east of Beijing Municipality. We’ll walk along the seldom-visited Gubeikou Great Wall, passing into Hebei Province, and ending up at the Jinshanling Great Wall park after a detour through the farmland surrounding Hemp Village. After a late lunch in one of the restaurants at Jinshanling we’ll head back to Beijing. The cost of food, drinks, round-trip transportation, and park tickets is included in the price.

Gubeikou to Jinshanling - Basic hike information
Cost: 380RMB per person; Bus leaves from Lido Starbucks at 8:30am; 2+ hours travel each way; 3-4 hours of hiking; return approx 5:30pm.

Gubeikou to Simatai via Jinshanling Great Wall Challenge

After recently scouting out an extra hour of wall-walking at Gubeikou, we decided to put it all together to make what must be one of the toughest 1-day Great Wall hikes in Beijing, covering the Gubeikou, Jinshanling, and Simatai stretches of wall. The wall in this area is built on ridges, and because there are not many trees on the ridgelines we will have broad views in every direction as we walk. As well as seeing some of the best Great Wall in Beijing, you’ll have a chance to test your legs with more than 20km of tough hiking, most of it on the wall.

Gubeikou to Simatai via Jinshanling Great Wall Challenge - Basic hike information
Cost: 470RMB per person; Bus leaves from Lido Starbucks at 8:00am; 2 hours travel each way; 7-8 hours of tough hiking; return approx 6:30pm.

  5. Saturday March 27th, 2010

Changyucheng ‘Long Valley City’ day trip

On this trip we’ll explore the village of Changyucheng, looking at old shrines, defensive walls, and a temple with a big old tree, before taking a good long walk up a long valley to a tablet that marks the border of Beijing Municipality and Hebei Province. We usually make this village a start or finish point for several of our tough Great Wall hikes in the same area - this trip is a good chance to see some of the same great scenery without making your legs so tired!

Changyucheng ‘Long Valley City’ day trip - Basic hike information
Cost: 320RMB; Bus leaves from Lido Starbucks at 8:30am; 2 hours travel each way; 3-4 hours of hiking; return approx 5:30pm.

  6. Sunday March 28th, 2010

    Walk Like a Pilgrim (Backwards)

Follow a paved pilgrim path and forest trails in Mentougou County, west of Beijing. Along the way you’ll see high mountain scenery, temple ruins, and forests of pine and birch trees, plus you’ll get some good hill-climbing exercise. Three to four hours of hiking, with a bit of hill climbing to begin.

Walk Like a Pilgrim (Backwards) - Basic hike information
Cost: 250RMB per person; Bus leaves from Lido Starbucks at 8:30am; 1.5 hours each way; 4 hours of hiking; return approx. 5:00pm.

  7. Wednesday March 31st, 2010

    Eastern Qing Tombs Sightseeing

Take a long-distance sightseeing trip to the Eastern Qing Tombs, a hard-to-find but very scenic spot a little outside of the Beijing municipality. In contrast to the Ming Tombs in Changping, the Eastern Qing Tombs are concentrated in a relatively small area, which means the highlights are all within easy walking distance. The tombs are just as interesting, and include those of historical figures such as Shun Zhi (first emperor of Qing Dynasty), Empress Dowager Cixi, and Qian Long (seventh and longest-reigning Emperor of Qing Dynasty). Price includes transport, guide, information and translation of park expert, through tickets for the tombs, a sandwich for lunch, plus snacks and drinks after we’ve finished looking around. Please note, no hiking involved!

Eastern Qing Tombs Sightseeing - Basic hike information
Cost: 450RMB adults, 300RMB for children under 12; Bus leaves from Lido Starbucks at 8:00am; 3 hours travel each way; approx. 3 hours of relaxed walking; return approx 5:30pm.
