Dahaituo Mountain, 2013/09/22
Photos from a misty mountain hike with lots of autumn colours.
Dahaituo Mountain is located in the far northwest of Beijing, on the border with Hebei Province.
Recently we’ve been taking a new route up to the top, avoiding most of the too-popular trail that is sometimes a little crowded.
No worries about being crowded on this visit, though – it was a working day after the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, and the bad weather in Beijing city must also have scared off any other hikers. It wasn’t until reaching the top that we saw anyone else on the mountain, and they’d come up from the other side.
For much of the hike we were walking in the clouds, but on the way down from the top the skies started to clear a little and we were able to see some excellent autumn colours while walking out through birch and pine forests.

We started by walking up valley trails towards a forest. Many of the trails we used on the first part of the hike have been made by cows going to and from the meadows further up.

The trail lead past birch trees.

Further up, we followed a trail along a ridgeline, with clouds from below being blown up from the valley and over the ridge.

Another part of the trail went through a pine forest. The clouds were being blown into the forest, and as the clouds condensed the drips from the trees felt like rain.

The trail down from the top crossed a broad plateau.

We hiked down through a pretty birch forest.
