Hiking photos - Gubeikou Great Wall Loop Midweek, 2011/11/02
Photos from a walk along the Gubeikou Great Wall.
For this hike we walk a section of Great Wall at Gubeikou, a stretch of wall that has seen a little bit of renovation work but remains fairly free of visitors.
We started off close by to the Beijing-Hebei border checkpoint, and followed the wall all the way up to the 24-Eyes Tower, one of the highest in the area.
Part of the Gubeikou Great Wall Loop descends from the wall and passes through quite woods.
The group makes its way along a ridge top en route from one branch of the Great Wall to another.
Great Wall towers in various states of disrepair can be seen in the distance.
This hike combines some fairly steep sections with a few nearly level ones.
Beautiful fall colors could still be seen in the area in early November.
Some of the towers were once two stories tall and were used as signaling towers.
There are lots of opportunities for photos on this walk, especially of far away sections of Great Wall snaking along the ridge tops far in the distance.
