We had a great time hiking during the October holidays, getting out into the countryside almost every day.

On the last day of the big holiday we went all the way out to Changping District for the relatively relaxing Longevity Village to Lily Village hike. The trails we followed on this hike were gentle ups and downs, with nothing too tough.

We started off at Longevity Village and followed a service road up through all the chestnut orchards above the village. The concrete road soon turned into a dirt trail which took us up and over a ridge, and then down to Haizi Village, where we saw nice old courtyard houses and took a short detour to visit the Silver Pagodas.

Not far from Haizi Village we stopped in at a small but fancy hot springs resort for a tasty lunch. After lunch – and a few drinks – we followed another valley trail to finish our walk at Lily Village—not a bad day out!

This is how rural residents of Beijing finish their soy bean harvest: chop the plants down, let them dry on the side of the road, and then thresh the dried plants to make the beans fall from the pods.
