On some of our Great Wall walks it’s a 40-minute hike before you set foot on top of it, but at Longquanyu it’s just two minutes before you’re up on top.
The first part of the hike takes us along a recently repaired section. It’s also the highest part of the trail, and the views of Great Wall and mountains are superb.
The repaired wall dips down steeply – very steeply! – into a valley before climbing again and following the ridges.
After a detour around a cliff, we hike along a stretch of ‘wild’ wall, and then hike down into another valley.
A stream runs through the valley, eventually leading to the Little West Lake, a park area where you can see the wall dipping down into the water.

The wall passes bouldery cliffs. In these boulders you can spot where chisels were used to break off the big blocks of rock that were used in the foundations of the wall.

In the tower you can see both old bricks and new bricks. The new bricks are a dark grey colour.

It’s hard to see from the angle of the photo, but the wall here is seriously steep.
