Learn about the Great Wall as you walk on it, for a close-up experience with history.
For this activity we’ve distilled our Great Wall knowledge into a handy worksheet, which you’ll use to enhance your hike on the Great Wall: first an introduction to the history and construction, followed by notes on special features to find—things that you could easily walk right past if not paying attention.
Worksheet and key topics
Staff and students will be supplied a worksheet that covers the key questions about this part of the Great Wall. The worksheet covers:
- History of the Great Wall
- Construction of the Great Wall
- Why was the Great Wall built in this location?
- Special features of this part of the Great Wall
- 1930s Sino-Japanese battle of the Great Wall
The worksheet is supplied in advance to staff, with answers filled. The worksheet may be used during the hike and/or in class for discussion.
Hiking trail
The hike on the Great Wall is of moderate difficulty, and can be made longer or shorter to suit the abilities of students.
The views are picturesque, with long vistas of ‘wild’ Great Wall running along ridgelines of mountains near and far.
After a climb up to the Great Wall the trail is mostly flat, with some ups and downs on the wall.
Some sections are narrow and slippery.
